The first sign of spring in many yards has shown its green shoots and yellow bulbs.
Daffodils are native to Northern Europe. The Roman Army played a role in introducing daffodils to the known world. The Romans believed daffodils had medicinal properties and were planted everywhere. The name daffodil comes from the Dutch term "affo dyle" which means that which comes early. Daffodil bulbs were brought across the ocean by settlers and planted in what was to become the United States. Their journey has been a long one from Rome to your yard and mine.
This sign of spring is a very welcome sight.
